Ricreating light in the shadow

Outdoor lighting for a prestigious exhibition venue

In the shade of new and recent buildings constructed around it, the Schirn Kunsthalle finds daylight again with a new lighting system for its northern side

Schirn Kunsthalle

The re-illuminated porch

Schirn Kunsthalle, over 180 meters long, is located in the heart of Frankfurt, between the quaint Romer neighbourhood and the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew. With nearly 500,000 visitors each year, it is one of the most important exhibition venues in Europe. On the northern side, a porch extends over the entire length of the building, joining the Schirn with the city center. Over time, the porch has been heavily overshadowed by some newly-built buildings nearby. The task for Stephan Zimmermann's lighting design studio was to re-illuminate this essential part of the building with daylight-style lighting. This goal was achieved thanks to the powerful Edith ceiling lights that were chosen for this project.

Choosing LED technology products grants users high performance lighting. Sets of four 100W luminaires were installed in order to obtain 52,000 lumens per set of units and thus have an illumination akin to sunlight. Moreover, the installed luminaires can recreate different light temperatures between 2700K and 6000K thanks to the Dynamic White technology, thus monitoring different light gradients. The solution developed by designers can programme proportional lighting by adjusting light both in brightness and colour depending on the time of the day.
