De Montel Terme di Milano

Lighting that enhances the sensory experience

Thanks to advanced lighting technology and meticulous stylistic care, combined with the design vision of Voltaire Design, the studio founded by architect Jacopo Acciaro and specialized in lighting design, the lighting of the new Terme de Montel in Milan comes to life: a wellness space where light, material, and architecture blend into a deep and immersive sensory experience.

A place designed to restore body and mind

A wellness retreat in the heart of the city

Le Terme de Montel are much more than a thermal center: they are an urban sanctuary conceived to rejuvenate body and mind, where every space has been designed to evoke emotion and restore balance.

A sensitivity to light

A highly curated approach

Natural surfaces, water, warmth, and silence shape an immersive journey, where light becomes a guiding element, leading guests through a variety of atmospheres—intimate, profound, and restorative.

The project was born from the desire to create a multisensory experience, where light plays the role of a “hidden protagonist”—guiding paths, enhancing architecture, and amplifying the sense of well-being.

It required a partner capable of managing every aspect of lighting—technical and architectural, indoor and outdoor—with consistency and completeness.

Linea Light Group was involved in all areas of Le Terme de Montel, with the goal of creating a dialogue between light and architecture.

“We chose Linea Light Group,” explains Acciaro, “because we were looking for a reliable Italian company with a versatile catalog and the willingness to support us with custom solutions, tailored for complex environments like thermal spas, which are exposed to extreme conditions such as steam, humidity, and moving water.”

The outdoor areas, spacious and articulated, required a dual focus: on one hand, the enhancement of the historic building (also following the guidelines of the Heritage Authority), and on the other, the visual definition of experiential zones, such as pools, walkways, and green spaces.

An organic and coherent lighting design

To highlight the architectural façades, Arcada projectors were used for arches and reliefs, along with Skin bi-emission wall fixtures. The thoughtful use of uplights and downlights such as Orma, Periskop projectors, and Rubber flexlights helped shape the space with depth and visual rhythm. The Xenia linear system was chosen to enhance the dramatic waterfall at the main entrance.

In pathways and green areas, light becomes a guide and a source of atmosphere:

“We used different bollards depending on the context,” explains Acciaro.Buzzer, with its anti-glare visual comfort, Bond Pro, with its elegant circular cut-off light, and Pistillo, small and minimal—perfect for light compositions in the garden.”

The lighting landscape is completed by the decorative Blum bollard and the flexible D-Wave linear system, positioned near the distinctive round pool in the inner garden. In the same area, the Alcor collection helps define the pathways.

Integrated lighting, architecture in the spotlight

Indoors, the project balanced technical and decorative lighting:

“The interior design studio had developed a strong aesthetic identity. Our task was to complement it with lighting in a way that was architecturally coherent and supportive of both functional and sensory experience.”

Custom solutions were employed, including Quantum and Warp Evo downlights:

“We were able to select custom optics, filters, and finishes—a major advantage in creating tailored lighting consistent with each space.”

In more intimate areas, Tara was chosen, while Paseo linear fixtures and flexlights like Rubber, Rubber Optics, and Ribbon were used in lounges and relaxation zones—often hidden in architectural coves and wood paneling. On ceilings, minimalist solutions like Giotto, Gypsum Cell, and Eyelet alternate with adjustable projectors such as Goose, Pound Focus, and Navata, which also perform well in technical areas like food service.

“A key role was played by the chosen light tone: a warm 2700 Kelvin light with high color rendering, ideal for enhancing materials and creating a soft, welcoming, and relaxing atmosphere—perfectly aligned with the sensory experience of the spa,” adds Acciaro.

Smart control and visual comfort

Control

Control was a central focus: all architectural light sources are dimmable and scenario-programmed, ensuring visual comfort, adaptability, and a high-quality spa experience. “Each space was calibrated based on time of day and function,” Acciaro emphasizes. “Light management is essential in spas: the environment must always feel relaxing, never overwhelming.”

Detail

The entire project reflects a strong focus on detail, color coordination, and visual coherence. “We worked extensively on the integration between light and architecture,” concludes Acciaro. “Hiding where possible, guiding where needed. The result is lighting that doesn’t dominate, but supports—a project that reflects the mood of the spa and the spirit of the place.”

Comprehensive solutions

In a project where perceptual quality was a key element, Linea Light Group proved to be the ideal partner, thanks to its broad and versatile catalog and its ability to deliver high-performance solutions perfectly tailored to the context. From technical to decorative lighting, every fixture was selected or customized to serve a specific purpose: enhancing architecture, guiding movement, respecting the original concept, or simply creating visual comfort and well-being.
